My name is Hilda. I was born and raised in Cuba. I was 14 years old in 1980 when the Mariel lift boat crisis happened. My mother passed away from cancer when I was 8. My father, my three brothers and I lived through the stand off of the Peruvian embassy in Havana, He was in his 50's, we were 11, 14, 17 and 20 years old. We occupied a 28,000 sqft space. There were 10,854 people standing in their own filth for days, no food, no hygiene products. We kept the same clothes and survived on about 800 calories, one meal a day, during the rest of the 54 day stand off. The story is a 3 part account about what was happening in Cuba, what was happening at the embassy and the amazing American response during the Mariel lift. I do have the accounts of the Peruvian ambassador at the time, and what was going on during negotiations with Fidel.
