Chinese Culinary Translator & Cultural Consultant
Budget: $250 – $750 USD
We are producing an exquisite digital recipe collection and food blog dedicated to authentic Chinese cuisine for an English-speaking global audience. We seek a true connoisseur of Chinese food culture—someone fluent in Mandarin and deeply connected to the culinary heritage—to translate, adapt, and culturally refine our content.
This role goes far beyond translation. It is about conveying the soul, tradition, and regional nuance of Chinese cooking. You will ensure every dish not only reads accurately but feels genuinely Chinese, from the choice of ingredients to the story behind the recipe.
Key Responsibilities
Translate & Transcreate Recipes & Stories
Convert detailed recipe instructions, ingredient lists, and accompanying blog narratives from English to fluent, natural Chinese (Simplified or Traditional as required).
Intelligently adapt measurements (imperial to metric), ingredient names (e.g., accurately distinguishing between 生抽 vs. 老抽, or finding the true regional name for a herb), and cooking techniques for a Chinese home kitchen context.
Transcreate food stories, proverbs, and cultural references so they resonate emotionally with a Chinese audience.
Cultural Authenticity & Regional Accuracy Audit
Act as our cultural guardian. Verify the authenticity of every dish against its claimed origin (e.g., ensuring a 麻辣香锅 recipe reflects Sichuan traditions, or that a 煲仔饭 follows Cantonese methods).
Correct any cultural or historical inaccuracies in the original content. Provide brief contextual notes on the history or significance of a dish where it enriches the reader's experience.
Food Styling & Photography Guidance
Review food photography and provide detailed styling notes to enhance authenticity (e.g., "This 小笼包 should be presented in a traditional bamboo steamer," or "The chopsticks should be placed correctly beside the bowl," or "The color of this 红烧肉 is too light—it should have a deeper, caramelized hue.").
Advise on props, table settings, and plating that reflect the correct regional and situational context (e.g., a family-style meal vs. a ceremonial dish).
Basic Layout & Formatting for Digital Publishing
Format the finalized Chinese text into our existing digital recipe book and blog layouts using provided templates (e.g., in Canva, Adobe InDesign, or well-structured Word/Google Docs).
Ensure the final PDF and web-ready documents are visually clean, typographically correct, and professionally presented.
Required Skills & Experience
(Please do not apply without meeting these core requirements)
Native-level fluency in Chinese (with impeccable writing in either Simplified or Traditional characters) and full professional proficiency in English.
Deep, demonstrable knowledge of Chinese regional cuisines (e.g., Sichuan, Cantonese, Shandong, Jiangsu, etc.). In your application, please tell us about your personal connection to a specific regional dish and what makes it authentic.
Proven experience translating or writing about food, recipes, or culinary culture. A portfolio of previous work is essential.
A sophisticated eye for food aesthetics and an understanding of what constitutes authentic Chinese food presentation and styling.
Technical capability to handle basic formatting in common layout or design software (Canva, InDesign, PowerPoint) to prepare final publishable files.
