LITERARY ANALYSIS
In this Literary Analysis, you must:
-analyze three or more of the short stories from this unit (do not include other Saki stories or
stories from other authors)
 write from the third person point of view (he/she/it/they), not the first person (I) or the
second-person (you)
-have a representative title (relate to the theme(s) you will address)
- analyze and interpret rather than simply summarize
- primarily utilize the writing styles of Example & Explanation and Comparison & Contrast
- make good use of direct quotation, summary, or paraphrase
- cite each story and incorporate ideas from two or more outside sources of critical analysis to
back up your claims about the literature (one source must be a biography)
- follow all MLA formatting guidelines
- avoid plagiarism when you use ideas by documenting your sources (using signal phrases and
parenthetical citation), following MLA citation guidelines, found at Purdue’s Online Writing
Lab (OWL)
- must not simply summarize the work (I have read it, which precludes the need for more than
a surface-level, place-holding summary)
- and must be a minimum of 4-5 pages long (not including the Works Cited page), following
the standard MLA formatting guidelines.
- use the theme "Humor" and use these short stories “The Lull” “The Open Window” “The Philanthropist and the Happy Cat” “The
Mappined Life”
