English Editing and Readability Enhancement

Job ID: 38416205

Budget: $8 – $15 AUD

I'm looking for someone to help me quickly fix obvious grammatical mistakes highlighted by DeepL AI's editing tool located at https://www.deepl.com/en/write, and make any other reasonable changes (mainly for conciseness, fix spelling mistakes, and perhaps make it in the active voice only if you think it will improve readability) as recommended by the AI tool.

Since we are using an AI tool, you do not have to be a professional text editor. Your only requirement is that you are fluent in the English language. The reason I am using DeepL AI is mainly to save you time to quickly catch issues with the text, and for me to quickly update a web site that desperately needs to be edited, but need not have to be perfect in every sense of the word. So long as the grammatical errors are wiped out, then I am happy.

I will be supplying you with one or several web pages depending on how much text is contained in them. I will be helping in this project to do this work, so I will be guiding you if you need help. Web pages to edit may take 15 minutes to potentially up to 3 hours to complete.

You do not need to be an expert in editing or in the subject matter. The DeepL AI will do the work of editing for you. The writing side is already done for you. As for the subject matter, this has been written to make the topics relatively easy to understand, but you will have some choice on subject matter if you prefer (so you won't get bored), if you ask.

Key Details:
- The web pages are targeted towards a general global audience, so your ability to make the text easy to read and understand based on DeepL AI's recommendations is essential.
- I'm seeking a balance between formality (if the AI recommends reducing a few words to one) and casualness (letting a few extra more words go if it reads well, and generally feels conversational is okay too).
- However, the number one requirement for this project is to fix obvious grammatical mistakes (things like plural and singular words i.e., are/is, it/him/her/their, etc., and past/present/future tense words not being consistent). You will see it when the AI tool highlights the word(s).

QUESTION 1
"What if I see a better way of writing the sentence than the one recommended by DeepL AI? Can I re-write the sentence?"

ANSWER
You may. However, the aim here is for quick changes, which is why I have chosen DeepL AI to assist. I want to make it as easy for you to make those quick changes by letting the AI tool find and highlight those errors for you. But if you are certain the recommendations from the AI tool is not good, I encourage you to make the changes as you deem necessary.

QUESTION 2
"I see DeepL AI changes individual words that I think are not an error when compared to the words you use. What do I do then?"

ANSWER
DeepL AI comes with a synonym tool. Which means it will not only edit the text, but also suggest alternative words with the same meaning. This is just there to provide a little variety in the choice of words. You may safely ignore these words. However, if you feel the choice of words in the original text is a bit repetitive, you may change the word(s) as you see fit. Generally, as you read the sentences and get a feel of the subject matter, you will probably make your own judgment as to whether the synonym word change is helpful or not.

QUESTION 3
"How does this work?"

ANSWER
The technique is this (and what I use at the moment):

1. Open the HTML text file (has the file extension .htm) in a web browser. It will look like plain text on a white background (so no need to worry about CSS stylising the text, just clean text).

2. Open the same HTML text file in a standard text editor (it will show some HTML commands, but ignore those; you can't miss where the human-readable text is located).

3. Grab a chunk of text from the browser version of no more than 2,000 characters (the AI tool limits this in the free version).

4. Open https://www.deepl.com/en/write

5. Paste the copied text into DeepL AI

6. Give it a few seconds and the AI will highlight words that it thinks is dubious or recommends changing.

7.Have the DeepL AI window open side-by-side with the HTML text editing app showing the page you are editing.

8. Do not copy and paste the AI edited text into the HTML text file. Most of the writing will probably not need it. And, I want to retain its overall original writing style. Furthermore, I do not want to lose HTML tags within paragraphs. What is critical here is to fix the obvious grammatical errors. That is the number one request. Beyond that, if you see a few words shortened to just one or two as recommended by the AI tool, this is generally okay to change (fewer words generally makes it easier to read). If you see the AI decide to rearrange sections of a sentence to make it in the active voice or brings the relevant information closer to the start of the sentence, this is okay too. If you see words that AI has changed based on its synonym tool, you can generally ignore them unless it helps to avoid repetitive word choices in the original text.

9. When you have reached the end of the text, save, and you are done with that page. Congratulations. You have edited the text to a higher standard. Thank you!

10. Send to me (your project client) and I will review the changes (side-by-side with the original to see how it reads). I will pick up quickly those improvements and see how well you have done. If you have done well, I can send you more HTML text files (if you want them, of course!).

Skills and Experience:
- Proficiency in English is absolutely crucial. You should have a good command of the language to ensure the text is accurate and comprehensible.
- Use of DeepL AI Editor is essential as the aim here is to let it quickly find and highlight issues, especially grammatical errors. Your task is to quickly fix those issues, especially the grammatical errors (the bane of my existence!).
- Prior experience in editing text is a plus, but not mandatory. I'm open to newcomers who have a keen eye for detail and a strong understanding of English.

Looking forward to seeing who on Freelancer.com can assist in this project.

All the best!
