Chinese Short Story Translation
Budget: $15 – $25 USD
I’m preparing the first of several Chinese short stories for an English-speaking readership and need a translator who can preserve the author’s voice, rhythm, and nuance rather than simply convert words. The material is purely literary—no legal clauses or technical jargon—so sensitivity to imagery, tone, and cultural context is essential.
What you’ll work on
• A contemporary short story written in Mandarin
• Source text supplied in clean, editable DOCX
• Rough length is modest (single-story), with additional pieces likely if this collaboration goes well
What I expect
• An English version that reads like an original work, yet remains faithful to characterisation, setting, and pacing
• Minimal footnotes only where absolutely necessary to clarify cultural references
• Delivery in DOCX, maintaining original paragraph breaks and any line-level emphases
Timelines & workflow
I’ll share the story as soon as we agree on terms. A quick sample passage (around 150 words) will serve as our quality check. Once approved, the full text can follow with a mutually agreed deadline—ideally within one week, though I’m flexible if stylistic polishing needs extra time.
If you have prior literary translations—especially short fiction—please send a brief portfolio link or excerpt. I look forward to collaborating on this and, potentially, the stories that come after it.
