WordPress - Images not showing with correct aspect ratio in popup

Fix custom code/plug-in in Word Press. The code allows the upload of gallery images of any size, applies a watermark, shows a thumbnail and full size image in popup box with navigation.
The uploaded image needs to be auto resized to a maximum height of 1000 px and max dpi of 72 dpi. The thumbnail has maximum height of 250 px (this is working correctly).
The problem. When an image is uploaded is very small (say 300px) it get stretched to 1000px H but loses it's original aspect ratio. It looks either stretched or compressed.
This should be a simple fix for a Word Press expert.
