Job Description
We are looking for a reliable and experienced WordPress technical maintenance specialist / backend freelancer for a long-term collaboration to support a large nonprofit website project.
This is not a content management role. Our internal team will continue to manage and publish website content, including adding new animals, pages, posts, and other editorial updates in the frontend/backend as part of normal content operations.
We are looking for a freelancer who can take full ownership of the technical maintenance, backend stability, security, server-related tasks, and ongoing monitoring of the website.
The website belongs to a large nonprofit organization and was launched on January 1, 2026. It currently includes approximately 300 pages and around 20 plugins, and it runs on an up-to-date WordPress environment.
Scope of Work
Your responsibilities will include the ongoing technical maintenance of the website to ensure smooth, secure, and uninterrupted operation, including but not limited to:
1. Technical website maintenance and monitoring
Without needing separate requests from us, you will regularly monitor and maintain the website, including:
Checking at least once per week that the website is fully accessible, functional, and navigable
Ensuring compatibility with the latest publicly available versions of:
Mozilla Firefox
Microsoft Edge
Google Chrome
Safari
Ensuring optimized usability on mobile devices including smartphones and tablets on iOS and Android
If an update required for newer browser versions is likely to reduce compatibility with older browser versions, you must inform us in advance so that a decision can be made before implementation
Monitoring external links and checking that they remain reachable
Ensuring that all SSL/TLS certificates remain valid and active
Monitoring available security patches, technical improvements, and security risk notices, and applying relevant patches/updates without delay
Performing all services according to current industry standards and best technical practices, within the limits of the existing website architecture
Informing us immediately if important security updates or technical adjustments are not possible, or only possible with disproportionate effort, due to the current system architecture
2. Error handling and technical support
You will be available by email and phone for technical troubleshooting and error resolution.
Expected response times:
Category 1: Website is not reachable → response within 24 hours
Category 2: Website is partially not functioning → response within 36 hours
Category 3: All other errors or technical requests → response within 48 hours
3. Server operations and technical infrastructure
You will take care of the technical operation of the servers and related systems, including:
Monitoring system performance
Security management
Performance optimization
Implementing and maintaining appropriate technical and organizational measures in line with current industry standards
Protecting the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of the website, its data, and its content
4. Platform and service management
You will manage and maintain the technical setup and administration of the following services:
Cookiebot
AWS
DigitalOcean
Domain Factory
5. Backup management
You will perform regular backups to ensure secure and reliable website operation and data protection.
Important Note: What is NOT included in this role
This role does not include editorial/content tasks such as:
Uploading or editing animals for adoption
Writing or formatting content
Creating new regular frontend content pages or blog posts on our behalf
Our team handles those tasks internally.
Your role is focused on the technical backend, maintenance, security, hosting/server environment, updates, and troubleshooting.
