Improve the performance of my sites on Google

I have two sites, one designed with canalblog and the other with WordPress that I would like to improve ie make them move up to the top 3 of the Google rankings.
In addition to that, I would like to improve my performance of the channelblog site on Google Insights page and then also change its theme (Template) to a Template more expressive to my niche.
