Complete the Development of WordPress Spaced Repetition (SRS) Language Learning Plugin
Budget: $250 – $750 USD
We are seeking an experienced WordPress/PHP developer to finalize a custom plugin designed for language learning (initially Hungarian/German) using Spaced Repetition System (SRS) principles.
A significant portion of the plugin is already developed. This includes:
- Custom Database Structure: Tables for detailed vocabulary (including multiple forms, examples, levels), user-specific learning stacks (wp_lingo_stacks tracking SRS data like Ease Factor, next review time), a predefined sequence for introducing new words, and user progress tracking.
- Admin Interface: Functionality for manual word management and CSV import of vocabulary and word sequences.
- Core SRS Logic: PHP functions implementing the core SRS algorithm (calculating Ease Factor based on user ratings 1-4, determining next review intervals dynamically).
- Basic User Management: Initialization for new learners and inactivity cleanup.
Reference Model Available: Crucially, a fully functional reference model of the entire logic exists in a VBA-based Excel spreadsheet. This will be provided and serves as a clear, verifiable guide for the intended functionality, data flow, and expected outcomes.
The Task:
Your primary role is to complete the plugin by integrating the existing components, ensuring the logic operates correctly according to specifications, and implementing the final user-facing features. While much of the complex SRS logic is written, the remaining work involves careful integration, testing, and refinement.
This project is well-suited for a developer who can efficiently understand an existing logical structure. While the codebase requires familiarization, the remaining coding tasks are considered relatively straightforward once the system's flow and the provided reference model are understood. This is primarily an integration and finalization task, not building from scratch.
Specific Required Tasks:
Correct Frontend Word Selection & Display:
Ensure the main shortcode ([lingo_display_word]) reliably selects the correct next learning item from the user's stack based on the SRS logic (next_earliest_pick <= current_pick_index).
Accurately populate the frontend UI with the selected word's data (HU/DE words, images, audio cues, explanations, levels) according to the defined display modes for different categories and learning stages (detailed specifications and the VBA model will clarify this).
Verify/Refine UI Interaction Logic:
Adjust and test the frontend JavaScript/PHP interaction for the different learning modes, ensuring the user's choices (e.g., multiple-choice selection, Yes/No response) correctly lead to the appropriate rating step (1-4 scale) and data submission to the SRS engine (lingo_bewerten function).
Verify Category Switching Logic:
Test and confirm that the automatic, system-driven category switching functions as intended (based on the availability of >=12 reviewable items in other categories within the next 12 steps).
Implement New User Onboarding:
Create the process/interface for new users on our WordPress site to easily opt-in and start using the Lingo Learner tool. This must trigger the necessary backend functions to initialize their user progress and learning stack correctly.
Required Skills:
Strong experience in custom WordPress Plugin Development.
Proficient in PHP (both procedural and understanding OOP concepts within WordPress context).
Experience with MySQL and WordPress database interactions ($wpdb).
Solid JavaScript skills (jQuery and/or Vanilla JS) for frontend interactions and AJAX.
HTML/CSS for UI adjustments.
Ability to read, understand, and work with existing codebases.
Familiarity with Spaced Repetition Systems (SRS) is a plus, but the ability to understand and implement logic based on the provided VBA/Excel reference is key. For sure it is useful to get help from newest AI-models to dive into.
Deliverables:
A fully functional and tested WordPress plugin meeting the specified requirements for word display, user interaction, SRS logic execution, category switching, and user onboarding.
Clean, well-commented code where modifications or new implementations are made.
How to Apply:
Please provide specific examples of custom WordPress plugins you have developed, especially those involving custom database interactions, AJAX, and complex logic.
Briefly describe your approach to familiarizing yourself with an existing codebase like this and how you would tackle the outlined tasks.
Mention your experience level with the required skills.
We are looking for a reliable developer to bring this exciting learning tool to completion. We believe with the existing foundation and clear reference model, this is an achievable and rewarding project.
