WPML Header/Footer Menu issues

I have WPML running on my WordPress site and all Spanish labels are ready; I now need the menus themselves put in place.It's a small problem I have.
1. I tried to change a menu item and lost the main menu on the 2nd language!
2. trying to translate item in main menu and another in the footer, links are their but the 2nd language is pulling the page title and I have no clear way of translating it.
Im using wpml, I will want an explainer as this has happened twice.
