WooCommerce Performance & CPU Spike Fix (Server + Action Scheduler)
Project Summary

We run a WooCommerce store on a managed VPS (10 cores) processing around 2,000 orders per month.

At times the server CPU spikes to 100%, taking the site offline.
Normal traffic is low and stable — this is not a traffic issue.

We need an experienced WooCommerce performance / server specialist to diagnose and permanently fix the issue.

Current Setup

WooCommerce (production site)

Managed VPS (Linux)

Redis Object Cache enabled

Plugins:

Mailchimp for WooCommerce

WP-Lister Pro (eBay integration)

External API JSON communication

SSH, WP-CLI, and database access available

Known / Suspected Causes

WooCommerce Action Scheduler backlog or concurrency issues

Cron job misconfiguration (WP-Cron vs system cron)

Background jobs consuming all CPU cores simultaneously

Scope of Work

You will be expected to:

Audit WooCommerce Action Scheduler

Inspect wp_actionscheduler_actions table

Identify backlog, stuck jobs, and job sources

Control batch size and concurrency to prevent CPU saturation

Fix Cron Configuration

Verify WP-Cron vs system cron setup

Ensure no duplicate or overlapping cron execution

Implement best-practice cron configuration for WooCommerce

Optimise Plugin Background Jobs

Reduce Mailchimp job retries / sync frequency

Tame WP-Lister Pro eBay sync jobs

Prevent API failures from causing job floods

Server-Level Review

PHP-FPM configuration under background load

MySQL / MariaDB behaviour during job execution

Confirm Redis Object Cache is effective

Stability & Handover

Ensure background jobs no longer cause 100% CPU spikes

Provide a clear summary of what was fixed and why

Required Experience (Important)

You must have real experience with:

WooCommerce Action Scheduler

WooCommerce cron jobs & background processing

VPS / Linux server administration

Redis Object Cache

WP-CLI

High-load WooCommerce environments

This is not suitable for:

Theme developers

Page builder experts

Designers

SEO or “speed score” optimisation gigs

Deliverables

WooCommerce site stable during background job execution

No monthly CPU spikes caused by scheduled jobs

Action Scheduler under control

Brief written explanation of changes made

Screening Question (Required)

Please answer this in your proposal:

How do you limit WooCommerce Action Scheduler concurrency and prevent cron-related CPU spikes?
