Build a Z-wave Network (hardware/Firmware)

I'm looking to understand how to build a Z-wave network and implement it. I wanted to understand more about the hardware and firmware used to build a Z-wave network. *As a note, I'm looking for hardware design and protocol implementation here which does take a lot of detail, not looking to purchase and use an already existing product from the market.
