TrueNAS File Server Setup

I have a new machine ready to run TrueNAS and need it turned into a reliable file-level storage server. The end goal is a set of SMB/CIFS shares that our Windows and macOS workstations can reach seamlessly. We will keep authentication simple for now—only local user accounts, no Active Directory or LDAP tie-ins.

Here’s what I need you to handle from start to finish:

• Install or upgrade TrueNAS to the latest stable release on the hardware I provide.
• Create a resilient storage pool (RAID-Z or mirror, depending on disk count) and configure datasets for file storage.
• Set up SMB/CIFS shares, apply the right permissions, and map them to a handful of test users using local account auth.
• Enable snapshots, quotas, and basic monitoring so the system is protected and easy to administer.
• Run a quick performance test to confirm throughput matches spec.
• Deliver concise documentation: pool layout, share paths, user list, and the exact steps you took so I can repeat or adjust in the future.
