Build a Custom Web Site

Job ID: 34595734

Budget: $10 – $10,000 USD

This project covers a high level design and the creation of a simple web site on a Linux-based server. Initially, the web site will involve only a dozen or so pages of mostly static content. We will build the web site out in future projects.

Ultimately, the web site will need to interface with a database and with a Linux server. We are proposing the use of the following technologies, although if you have different ideas we are willing to listen:

For the web framework, we are looking to use a Python-centric system such as Django, Jam.py, TurboGears, or Web.py. The choice of web framework will constrain the type of database we use. However, our system will also need to use a database to contain dynamic data that will be updated asynchronously and eventually need to be visualized via the web site. For this, we are looking at using a non-SQL database such as nomysql or TimescaleDB, but we are open to other suggestions as well.

This project will be divided into two milestones:

The first milestone will be for the delivery of a high level design document which outlines the main elements of the design and how they fit together. The purpose of this document is to make sure that we are all on the same page and that the proposed system will be suitable down the line as we build out the system into an interactive dynamic site.

The deliverable for the first milestone will be a high level design document that details the creation of the web site as described below for the second milestone and that also demonstrates compatibility with our plans to extend the web site subsequent to this project's completion. The format of this may be negotiated but we suggest Google Documents for ease of collaboration.

The second milestone will be for the delivery of an operational web site on our Linux server (we will provide full command line access to the server). The web site will contain less than ten static web pages and a couple of very simple dynamic pages. The dynamic pages will query a database based on a couple of search terms and return a formatted table of results. We will provide the static content and the database content in a mutually agreed upon format.

The deliverable for the second milestone will be an operating web server with our static and limited dynamic content all present up and running on our Linux server. The Linux server will be configured with whatever libraries and services you require to build the web site. If configuration of any services is required, you will be given the necessary access to do so.

In order to complete this project, you will need to be familiar with setting up web sites using a Python-based framework mutually agreed upon, a mutually agreed upon database capable of being installed on Linux, the Linux command line, some basic Python scripting, and finally a bit of HTML/CSS to format our web content in a professional looking manner.

It is difficult to anticipate all of the questions prospective bidders may have for a project like this. We will happily answer your specific questions to the best of our ability. We encourage any interested bidders to schedule a quick Zoom or Google meeting with us. It has been our experience that interactive meetings of this nature are much more efficient at getting you all of the answers you need and insuring that effective communication is possible between us to ensure the best outcome for all involved.

The winning bidder will be selected based on a combination of factors including both bid price as well as our impression of their ability to complete the work. Previous experience with this kind of project will be very helpful.
