MICDC is a NC nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization formed by residents who lived at the historic black orphanage Memorial Industrial School established in 1928 and closed in 1971 located in northwest Forsyth County at Horizons Park. (micdc.org)
Our Mission and Vision Statement seeks to improve the quality of life for Forsyth County residents by addressing social determinants of poverty including food and nutrition, agricultural, economic, social and community needs while preserving the historical and rural character of the area.
To advance our mission:
• We sponsor programs that promote historical preservation, economic and social equality.
• We actively sponsor a sustainable food and farm programs for Forsyth County residents impacted by
and to address the food desert in particular and rural communities in general.
• We serve all who live and/or work in Forsyth County, emphasizing support for low- to moderateincome residents and businesses.
Our over-riding purpose is to develop a community ethos which results in locally based sustainable food
and agriculture strengths and builds economic and social connections in the community. and anchors
people into both a sense of place and the community itself.
In light of the scarcity of African American farmers in the area, we endeavor to 1) regain the importance of the local black history and legacy of this former black institution and 2) connect our farm program with the success of the past farming program of this facility by development of a sustainable food and incubator farming operation which will allow low wealth citizens living in this food dessert to reap the benefits of this project.
The farm purpose is wo-fold: 1) revivify the legacy and local black history of the institution, 2) establish a comprehensive and sustainable local food and farm program that will create jobs and address social determinants of health and its impact on poverty.
We have two leased parcels of land from the county to start our incubator farming and small plot gardening where prospective farmers and gardeners are given temporary, exclusive, and affordable access to small parcels of land and training to hone their skills and how to launch a farm business. Participants will learn soil health, composting, crop rotation, seedling, produce distribution
Beginning farmers learn skills in farming business and how to operate their own farm and to access land, capital, and credit opportunities.
Students are taught by Master Gardeners the impact that food choices have on the environment, nutritional facts about food and diets, and the culture of farming
Veteran farmers learn new farming skills techniques (crop rotation, soil health and biodiversity).
Planting beds and plots are available for lease to gardeners and farmers to grow their own crops.
Produce is provided for local minority food distributors, low income families, food bank and minority food cooperatives
