Cartoonish Fantasy Children's Book Illustrator
Budget: $30 – $250 CAD
Looking for someone willing to illustrate a potential series of rhyming picture books in a Dr Seuss- like fantasy style island setting with a Biblical worldview.
Ideal Illustrator would:
-Know more about ratios and formatting than I do
-Create characters with a wide variety of expressions (guilt, pity, envy, joy, rage, etc.)
-Create spreads with substantial background detail when called for (crowds, beach cliffs, path in woods, etc)
-Be cooperative in trying to implement my ideas, while also bringing their own creative vision to the table
-Communicate well in English
-Work with a palette and style that feels energized and whimsical, yet emotionally resonant (most stories feature relational themes)
-Use a simple cartoon, watercolor or painted style to acheive the vibe I'm hoping for: Something with character and enough imperfections/quirks that it looks like a human touched it, but with enough details to do the stories justice. Please no modern art with creepy disfigured faces, etc. I'm a huge fan of Bill Watterson's art in his Calvin and Hobbes comics, as well as Dr Seuss's art, though a broader color pallette would be good. I'm really looking for a style that communicates quirky fun over preachy sermons.
-Commit to keeping rainbows only the sky, after rain, as they are found in the natural world.
-Be ready to own the connection with stories and branding that convey a Biblical worldview. Some themes may include created design, sanctity of all life, etc. (No need for moral crusading on the illustrator's part, I just want to be upfront about my own branding.)
If you're interested, I'd love to see what you've created in the past! I'd first hire you to do one drawing, and then if I want to hire you for the whole series, we'd write up a contract.
