"Some people consider Nietzsche important because he created one of the most original and insightful theories of ancient Greek tragedy we have.
Others consider him important as the author of perhaps the most penetrating, radical, and relentless criticism of the Western rationalist tradition ever achieved.
There are only a few really vivid and thought-provoking accounts of Socrates’ place in the philosophical and cultural tradition, and Nietzsche is responsible for one of them. Aristophanes presented Socrates as a fool and a fraud. Plato out-did Aristophanes by painting an even more memorable portrait of Socrates as a wise man. Nietzsche tried to out-do Plato by imagining Socrates as a mentally ill but fiendishly clever manipulator of minds and emotions. It’s too early to know whether he succeeded, but we’re unlikely to stop debating the issue in the foreseeable future.
Still others consider Nietzsche important because he was one of the greatest prose stylists in the history of philosophy (and more).
None of these reasons for Nietzsche’s importance has anything to do with whether one agrees with Nietzsche or likes what he said or how he said it. It’s rather that he said things never said before on vitally important topics, and did so in unforgettable ways."
