Excel VBA project

Need to carry tasks I am not familiar with in VBA. Need to take an excel range made out of character and pass it to VBA as an array. The array is a one-dimensional one. It consists of a long string along in one column and nineteen rows. I need to be able to identify characters within the strings. I also need to perform VLOOKUPs in the data array.
