Copy Taxi Information for 8 cities from 3 websites to a Spreadsheet
Budget: $50 – $60 USD
The purpose of this project is to:
A. Copy taxi cab company information from 3 websites onto the attached spreadsheet, for all taxi cab companies in 8 cities in Massachusetts.
B. Make a snip (jpeg) of this information from the website.
You can make the snips (B) first and from them fill in the spreadsheet (A).
The 3 websites are chamberofcommerce.com, yelp.com and yellowpages.com. There are complete exact directions below for each website. Each website displays its taxi companies in an exact format for that website. You will extract the data from every taxi company the same way for each website.
Also note that a few listings are not a taxi for a person, which you skip. Examples: (1) A Better Way Pet Sitting Service: Dog Walking, Cat Care, Pet Taxi. (2) Clippership Apartments on the Wharf.
The 8 Massachusetts cities are Arlington, Belmont, Boston, Brighton, Brookline, Cambridge, Somerville and Watertown.
The spreadsheet has 3 rows (taxi cab companies) already filled in, one from each website. There are 6 columns to fill in:
A. TAXI#: sequential number for each company (row).
B. PHONE NUMBER: The phone number displayed with the taxi cab company.
C. CITY: Must be one of the following 8 cities in Massachusetts (abbreviated MA):
Arlington, Belmont, Boston, Brighton, Brookline, Cambridge, Somerville, Watertown. You use the first 3 letters of the city name (ARL, BEL, . . . , WAT). Ignore North, South, East and West in any city name. Example: “East Arlington” = Arlington is ARL.
D. NAME Of TAXI: Name of the tax cab company.
E. RATING (Average score / # of Reviews): The rating is a fraction consisting of the average score 1-5 and the number of reviews. The number of reviews is given in all 3 sites. For the examples, they are 38, 11 and 42.
The Average is given for chamberofcommerce.com (4.4) and yelp.com (2.7). For yellowpages.com the Average (top number) is given as the number of stars that are yellow.
Example: If 4 are yellow, the Average is 4. If 4 are yellow and the last star is 1/2 yellow, add a plus to the 4 for an Average of 4+. So, for 42 reviews, the rating would be 4 / 42 and 4+ / 42. Likewise for 1, 2 and 3 yellow stars. Just count the number of solid yellow stars, and add “+” if one more star is half yellow.
F. WEBSITE: The website column contains an abbreviation of the actual website name. The abbreviations for chamberofcommerce.com, yelp.com and yellowpages.com are CC, Y and YP, as described in the heading cell F1.
G. If there is a problem or you have a question, enter it into column G. Column H is available for anything else you might need.

For each of the 8 cities, you will search for that city in all 3 websites.

6. For the Rating, the Average (top number) is given as the number of stars that are yellow.
