I want you to think of learning social norms, and in this case the view of norms related to sex, as a person walking out into a field. As you picture this vast field the individual walks out and notices that as they walk bricks are stacking up on each side of them making something like a hallway. These bricks were placed by the world they live in. Think of a person walking into a wall as that one time they wore something revealing and got a bad reaction, or the time they said something that went just a little too far for those they were speaking with. The hallway starts to form a labyrinth of where a person can go. Maybe they walk down one as they think of possibly being bisexual. Maybe it’s a long walk? Maybe it’s a short walk to a wall when they decide, “nope, that’s not for me.” We come to understand what we are allowed to do, and what we want to do, within an area of learned comfort and societal acceptance. Our hallway. Our Labyrinth.

Sometimes however, people are not slowly walking out into a field. They are suddenly thrown far out into the field having no idea where they landed. Sexually assaulted by a cousin, rape, or a far too early introduction pornography. “Where am I?” “What is this?” The worlds labyrinth that exists in everyone else’s eyes cannot be seen by this individual because it never had time to form. Lost in a labyrinth they cannot see they can be scarred, confused, and shunned by others. This individual walks through walls they did not know were there. Shamed as a slut, possibly used by others, and maybe questioning their sexuality, they are just attempting to find their way.
