FFmpeg Expert for Low-Bitrate Video Compression
Budget: $25 – $50 USD
We are building a system that requires compressing HD videos into very lightweight files for distribution. Our goal is to reliably achieve ≤ 88 MB per hour while maintaining the highest possible visual quality.
Because this translates to an extremely low bitrate (~195 kbps total), we want to explore H.264 encoding strategies that balance size and quality, including testing resolutions at 720p, 540p, and 480p to see what works best for different content types.
What We Need
An ffmpeg expert who can:
Take our provided sample HD video.
Compress it to H.264, targeting ≤ 88 MB per hour (hard cap).
Experiment with resolutions (720p, 540p, 480p) and encoding strategies (2-pass, CRF, filters).
Demonstrate the best achievable quality under these constraints.
Proposal Requirements
To apply, please:
Download the sample video (link will be provided).
Compress it with ffmpeg to meet the ≤ 88 MB/hour size limit.
You may submit more than one version (e.g., 720p and 540p) if you believe it shows trade-offs.
Submit the following with your proposal:
-The compressed file(s)
-The exact ffmpeg command(s) you used
-A short note on why you chose those parameters (bitrate math, resolution, filters, presets, etc.)
Only proposals with an actual test submission will be considered.
Selection Criteria
We will select based on:
Best balance of quality vs file size under the 88 MB/hour cap.
Clarity of explanation for chosen parameters.
Ability to communicate trade-offs (e.g., why 540p might look better than 720p at this bitrate).
Next Step (Hourly Consultation)
The candidate with the best-performing result will be hired for an hourly consultation project, where we will:
Fine-tune encoding strategies (bitrate targeting, CRF, 2-pass).
Explore adaptive methods for different video content types.
Work on integrating ffmpeg into automated pipelines.
