Hiring Unity Developers for 2D Multiplayer Roguelike Card Game (Mobile)

Job ID: 39635600

Budget: $5,900 – $6,000 USD

We are a nonprofit studio developing a lighthearted, socially conscious 2D real-time multiplayer game for mobile platforms. This is not a hypercasual or puzzle game — it features a fixed gameplay loop, real-time cooperative and competitive mechanics, and card-based strategy elements.

We are seeking to hire 2–3 Unity developers with experience in 2D mobile game development, real-time multiplayer using Photon or similar solutions, and UI/UX implementation optimized for mobile devices. Familiarity with game logic systems such as card cooldowns, upgrades, or class-based abilities is a plus. Bonus points for experience with AI logic (e.g., fallback bots), as well as working knowledge of backend platforms like Firebase or PlayFab.

Key features include 3v3 multiplayer battles (both co-op and competitive), matchmaking, path voting, a round-based roguelike progression system, a card engine with drag-and-play functionality, and a cosmetic system involving hats, pets, and animations. All core art and audio files will be provided during the late stages of development.

To expedite development and reduce scope creep, we will provide access to AI tools. Additionally, we will be working from a pre-selected Unity roguelike framework/asset pack to help jumpstart development.

The total budget for the initial engagement is $6,000, with payment structured as $1,500 per month for the first four months. After that, the budget will be $1,000 per month for the remaining development timeline. The full project is expected to run for 10 to 12 months in total.

This game will be in active development for at least the next 10-12 months. Our goal is to launch a polished MVP in the first phase, followed by regular content updates and live-service support. This is a long-term project with the potential for increased compensation after the successful delivery of the MVP. Developers who show strong performance, commitment, and alignment with the vision may be offered continued work at higher pay rates for post-launch updates, feature expansions, and future game iterations as the the game grows.

You’ll be working closely with a dedicated Creative Director who brings a clear vision, structured timelines, and well-organized documentation to guide the development process. The Creative Director will provide ongoing direction, feedback, and creative support — including gameplay design, system flow, and audio production.

All selected freelancers will be required to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) and an Intellectual Property (IP) Assignment Agreement before beginning work.

If you have prior experience building real-time multiplayer games or have worked on mobile games with combat or card mechanics, we would love to hear from you.
