PsychoPY Multilingual Lexical Decision Experiment
Budget: $8 – $15 CAD
PsychoPY
Introduction: In this assignment, we will continue the experiment we created earlier. However, instead of performing a lexical decision task in English between words and pseudowords, we will create three different versions of the experiment: 1. A version in which we make a lexical decision in English (“Is X a word in English?”), 2. A version in French (“Is X a word in French?”), 3. A bilingual version in which participants are given a cue at the beginning of each trial indicating the language for which they are to make the decision. To do this, you will need to: Step 1: Modify the stimulus set • Replace the nonwords with 30 French words that are not cognates between French and English (e.g., chaise or clavier). • Ensure that the noncognate French words do not differ in lexical frequency, number of letters, or syllables from the other French word conditions (cognates and false friends). Use the 'freqlemlivre' column in the file "French_freqlist_Lexique383" (available on Studium in 'other materials') to ensure that the frequency is balanced. • The final list will therefore contain: o 15 FR-EN cognates, o 15 FR-EN false friends, o 30 French non-cognates, o 30 English non-cognates. Step 2: Add images as language cues • Look for two images that will serve as a cue to signal the language to be assessed: one for French and one for English. Save these images in your working directory containing the experiment. • Add an "image" component to your experimental trial to display the language cue for 500 ms before the fixation cross appears.
