Professional Indonesian-to-English Translation

Job ID: 40090020

Budget: ₹750 – ₹1,250 INR

KKI and SODK:
We need a couple of long texts translated from Indonesian into very good, professional English.

Kamus Kayan-Indonesian (KKI):
This is an encyclopedic dictionary of the Kayan language, spoken in upland Borneo. Most definitions are short, but the work is over 2000 pages (docx). You will get a complete copy of the dictionary, and will translate only the Indonesian, replacing it with English, leaving the Kayan words and examples in the original Kayan as typed (maybe, changed to Bold).

Sejarah Orang Dayak Kayan (SODK):
This is a narrative account of Kayan culture and history, nearly 1000 pages (docx). This and the Kamus are the masterworks of a Kayan scholar from West Kalimantan who became a Catholic priest, and spent his life as pastor of his home community, working on the oral literature of his people, including very fine long epic songs (these, I am translating). This History is written in Indonesian, with Kayan words, and also needs to be translated into good clear English.

It will be possible to start the translations in Google Translate (or AI), but you'll need to edit and improve the result with care. Some Kayan words look like Indonesian to the machine, and the result can be ridiculous (for instance, "dayung" in Kayan means shaman, not paddle). Usually the Indonesian text is clear, though you will need to learn a lot about Kayan culture and mythology. It is important that translations be standardized between works and over the course of each work, and consistent with what I and others have written elsewhere. For instance, perahu should be translated as longboat, never as dugout or canoe, and rumah usually as longhouse (or descent group-- context matters!). I will be glad to help with cultural details.

Which text do you want to start with? I will send you a few pages first, so you can see what the work is like and how long it takes you, and I can see how you do it. I'd prefer it if you give be an estimate of your fee by page, rather than by hour. Yes, you will be named and credited in the final publications, and your work will be highly valued and appreciated by scholars and the general public, long after we are gone!
