As a legal transcriptionist, your main responsibilities are to transcribe dictation and dialogue, organize and backup transcription files, and retrieve transcriptions for your employer.
To be a good legal transcriptionist, you must be able to type at speeds more than 30 words per minute, you must be able to parse unclear dialogue accurately, and you must possess a strong working knowledge of legal vocabulary and jargon. In addition, your duties require you to focus on a single, demanding task for hours on end, so you must have a long attention span and careful attention to detail despite fatigue. Lastly, you must be able to respect the confidentiality of the material you transcribe, especially as it relates to private individuals, your employer, or both.
