I’m developing a line of soft and tug-style dog toys and need an experienced textile professional to guide my material choices. My must-haves are simple: the toy has to survive a determined chewer, stay completely non-toxic, and remain price-friendly once we scale up production.
Here is where I stand: for the outer layer I’m leaning toward hemp, organic cotton, or recycled cotton, but I’d love an expert comparison that also considers jute, linen/flax, wool felt, cork fabric, or any other sustainable workhorse you know. Strength and durability sit at the top of my list, followed closely by bite-safe chemistry and an overall low environmental footprint.
For the filling or layered core I want to avoid polyester and standard plastics. I’m open to natural fibres, wool felt, or recycled content that stays completely petroleum-free. If there is a clever construction technique—say a multi-layer weave or a felted barrier—that extends life without compromising sustainability, I want to hear about it.
