Write and Create Safe Handling Procedures for Wine Barrel Racks
Budget: $250 – $750 AUD
we are looking for someone to write a procedure for the safe handling of wine barrel racks. Spanlift manufactures a range of Gorilla Products Wine Barrel Storage Racks (insert weblink to barrel cradle and barrel master) We are wanting to provide a generic safe handling procedure to our clients to help identify and eliminate WHS risks and meet our obligations to the clients. The type of things we are looking for in the safe handling procedure include,
• Barrel rack description and name of parts (we can provide a drawing for this)
• Care must be taken when lifting the barrel rack with a forklift. Ensure that the work tynes are inserted into all 4 fork pockets (we can provide a diagram of this)
• When moving the barrel rack via forklift, drive on a surface and at a speed that is safe
• When stacking racks together, ensure that,
o The floor is suited to weight of the racks and barrels
o The recommended storage height for the racks and the building are not exceeded (as the user of these racks you should perform a safety analyse on how high to stack racks in your building based on clearances, equipment, operator skills and floor loadings)
o Make sure that the first rack is placed appropriately to enable additional racks to be placed on top without interference or risk in areas above the initial rack (consider placing makings on the floor to designate barrel rack storage areas)
o For the barrel cradles we should include a section on ensuring that the same sized barrels are paired together for stacking. Also we need to mention that the barrel integrity should be regularly checked
o Ensure that all stillage legs are connecting when lowering rack onto rack
o Ensure that rack is free from stillage below when lifting off stack
• If your barrel hall is in a earthquake zone you should have a procedure for this type of event (include earthquake pic of a barrel hall)
• When creating barrel rack storage areas, ensure that walk ways and or fire escapes are not impeded
• Ensure that walkways in barrel halls are clearly designated
• Perform regular inspections on barrel racks for structural integrity, tag out and don’t use damaged racks (tag out procedure?)
• Care when stacking/de-stacking empty racks or cradles (provide a diagram on how to stack)
• If transporting barrels in racks by transport, ensure that the wine barrels are safely secured to the rack and that road transport procedures are also followed (show diagram of how this could be achieved)
• Possible Hazards that may exist when handling wine barrels
o Racking collapse due to forklift impact or incorrectly stacked racks (one way to reduce risk here is by using Gorilla Barrel Masters vs Barrel Cradles)
o Barrel collapse (barrel cradles)
o Material handling when turning, lifting or placing barrels
o Barrel Cleaning with high pressure
o Fumes from Gassing Empty Barrels
o Chemical Hazards from Ammonia, Sulfur Dioxide, Ozone and/or Fining agents
o Mould
o Forklift use
o Slipping hazard due to water, wine or mould
• Risk register including matrix (could either provide a template for the end user to complete, or maybe a pre-filled example)
• Solutions to reduce risks / hazards
