Software Engineering: mainly analysis and design, potentially programming (or prototyping)
Background/Motivation
The advent of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) imposes organizations to
cope with radical changes concerning user data protection paradigms. GDPR, by promoting a Privacy
by Design approach, obliges organizations to drastically change their methods regarding user data
acquisition, management, processing, as well as data breaches monitoring, notification and
preparation of prevention plans. This enforces data subjects (e.g., citizens, customers) rights by
enabling them to have more information regarding usage of their data, and to take decisions (e.g.,
revoking usage permissions). Most of the time, these rights can be guaranteed to data subjects
through software systems. However, data subjects are often unaware of related functionalities offered.
to them, and how to really leverage on them for fulfilling their rights. Moreover, often such new
functionalities are complex, with difficult flows to follow and unclear. Accordingly, awareness of
citizens on these functionalities, to know which ones are available and how to use them in a guided
way, need to be enforced as well. In fact, GDPR implies, through such new functionalities and rights
offered, also from the citizen perspective, the embracement and the usage of new complex
processes. Therefore, citizens need to be guided and motivated to embrace this new culture.
Accordingly, it is needed to identify how to make these software systems more engaging, facilitating
the usage of them, to change the citizen approach towards fulfilment of their rights, to make this a real
cultural and behavioural change.
In the literature, one of the most important and effective technique for making software more engaging,
is related to the usage of acceptance requirements analysis based on gamification, i.e. using game
concepts and game design mechanisms for improving software features. In the requirements
engineering community, an Acceptance Requirements Framework Based on Gamification has been
proposed, it is called Agon. This framework supports the analyst in a systematic acceptance
requirements analysis and design of gamification, by providing guidance and suggestions, with an
interactive method. The effectiveness of Agon has been proved in many heterogeneous domains, in
realistic and real cases within European Projects.
