STEP 1 — Normalize Styles (10 minutes)
Open Final_Master.docx
Press Ctrl + Shift + Alt + S (Styles Pane)
You will map the document to these styles:
What it is Word Style
Book Title Title
Phase titles (Phase 1, Phase 2…) Heading 1
Major sections Heading 2
Subsections Heading 3
Body text Normal
Tables Table Text
Figure captions Caption
How:
Click any Phase title → apply Heading 1
Click section titles → Heading 2
Subsections → Heading 3
Do not manually bold — use styles.
This is what makes TOC + headers work.
STEP 2 — Insert Section Breaks
Go to:
Location Insert
End of front matter Layout → Breaks → Next Page
Before Phase 1 Next Page
Before Phase 1.5 Next Page
Before Phase 2 Next Page
Before Appendices Next Page
This creates independent page-numbering zones.
STEP 3 — Page Numbering
Front Matter
Click in first section →
Insert → Page Number → Format Page Numbers → Roman (i, ii, iii)
Start at i
Main Body
Click in Phase 1 section →
Insert → Page Number → Format Page Numbers → Arabic (1,2,3)
Start at 1
Uncheck “Link to Previous”
STEP 4 — Running Headers (your choice
Double-click header.
Type:
Global Shockwave & EMTT Clinical Reference —
Then insert:
Insert → Quick Parts → Field → StyleRef → Heading 1
This makes the header auto-change:
“Global Shockwave & EMTT Clinical Reference — Phase 1…”
STEP 5 — Footer Page Numbers
Insert → Page Number → Bottom Center
Do not type numbers manually.
STEP 6 — Build the TOC
Click where TOC goes.
References → Table of Contents → Custom
Include:
Heading 1
Heading 2
Heading 3
Check:
Show page numbers
Right align
Dotted leaders
Click OK
STEP 7 — Update Everything
Press Ctrl + A
Press F9
Choose Update entire table
Your TOC now becomes real.
STEP 8 — Export PDF
File → Save As → PDF
Choose:
“Best for Printing”
“Document structure tags for accessibility” ON
This creates a publishable PDF.

- Roman-numbered front matter
- Arabic-numbered body
- Live TOC
- Running headers
- Medical-book layout
- Sellable PDF
