Topic : Energy efficiency in modern buildings: identifying the best metric
worldwide
description:
"Improving energy efficiency in buildings worldwide is a critical strategy in achieving net zero and mitigating the climate emergency. One of the most common methods to achieve this is to optimise the U-value of walls which leads to more insulation. This was developed by countries in cold climates, such as the UK.
However, there are many hidden assumptions in using U-value as a metric for energy efficiency. Primarily, it assumes that the external air temperature is reasonably constant – which is true for northern Europe – and that the wall is essentially in a thermal steady state. This is however not true for warm climates such as southern Europe (e.g. Spain) or Australia, where the temperature changes substantially and rapidly. In those cases, thermal inertia is a superior metric as it captures this transient effect, and use of U-value may be detrimental.
This project aims to use external air temperatures in cities worldwide to create a map identifying the best solution for each country: U-value or thermal inertia. This has previously been demonstrated for Australia. Use of a programming language e.g. Python or MatLAB is recommended, but a spreadsheet could suffice. For developing countries, this could help them better optimize energy savings instead of blindly applying U-value to their detriment”.
