A furnace repair company claimed the six-year-old heat exchanger from my gas furnace was cracked and “imminently dangerous,” insisting I replace the entire unit for more than $8,000. I removed and kept the exchanger and, to my eye, see no damage. Before I consider legal action, I need an independent, professional evaluation focused on:
• Structural integrity of the exchanger walls, welds, and seams
• Safety compliance with current residential gas-furnace standards (e.g., ANSI Z21.47, HVAC/R best practices)
The deliverable I need is a concise written summary (a few pages) that:
1. States whether defects exist, backed by inspection data or images.
2. Explains any safety implications in plain language.
3. Offers clear recommendations—repair, continued use, or full replacement—grounded in code or manufacturer specs.
Non-destructive methods such as borescope inspection, dye-penetrant testing, or pressure decay testing are welcome as long as results are documented. Please include photos or video stills if you capture them.
I will ship or deliver the exchanger to your lab/shop if you are within driving distance, or we can arrange an on-site visit. Turnaround within two weeks is ideal, but let me know if you need more time for testing.
