US Tax Recovery for Casino Winnings

Job ID: 40196212

Budget: €250 – €750 EUR

In 2025 I hit a sizeable win at a U.S. casino and, as a German citizen who is not a U.S. resident, had the standard 30 % withholding applied on the spot. My goal is to file the correct non-resident return and retrieve that money.

Where things stand
• I still have an old ITIN, but it has been dormant for years and is almost certainly inactive. I’m not sure whether a straight renewal or an entirely new W-7 package is the smarter route, so I need guidance here.
• 1042-S paperwork is available. Is there anything else needed?
• No U.S. tax paperwork for the 2025 year has been prepared so far.

What I need from you
1. Confirm the best ITIN strategy, assemble the Form W-7 (or renewal) packet with the correct supporting ID, and shepherd it through to acceptance.
2. Prepare a complete 1040-NR (plus Schedule NEC or other attachments) that properly reports the gambling income, cites the correct withholding, and claims the refund.
3. Walk me through any extra forms a German non-resident gambler might need, then provide a ready-to-sign return and clear mailing instructions (or e-file if possible).
4. Offer practical help retrieving missing casino or withholding documents, including draft request letters or direct casino liaison if you already have industry contacts.

Acceptance criteria
• IRS-confirmed ITIN (new or renewed) in my name.
• 2025 non-resident tax return package accepted by the IRS or, at minimum, mailed/e-filed with delivery proof.
• A brief memo outlining the filing position and expected refund calculation.

A background in non-resident U.S. taxation, Form 1040-NR, and gambling-related withholding is strongly preferred. Knowledge of treaty nuances for German residents is a plus. If this matches your expertise, let’s reclaim that 30 %.
