Project assessment
Acquire and understand multiple datasets
– Identify at least 1 dataset
– Acquire access to datasets
• Download or Cloud access
– Inspect data
• Identify features of interest
• Determine key objectives
– What it is you wish to show with this project
• Pre-process the data
– Data cleansing
– Structure data to suit method
• Identify key results in dataset
– Quantifiable results
– Prefer statistical significance
• Produce visual representations
– Identify and implement several methods
– Multiple variables (>2) to be identified
– Create approximately 6-8 Visualisations
• Engage in User testing of results – Peer assessment
• Construct a narrative by which to present the findings
• Findings should follow one another
• The project should finish by making a clear conclusion or recommendation based
on the findings.
Project Deliverables
Written report: 50%
• Description of the data
• Elementary domain information – present research case
• Description of analysis performed
• Description of visual design process
• Discussion of results demonstrated
• Guide length: 1,500-2,000 words
Interactive Visualisation: 50%
• Create collection of related visuals
• Ability to interact and filter data
• Show insights at multiple levels
Learning outcomes may be assessed through a
project in which learners must choose and
acquire a set of raw data; design, develop, and
document a process for preparing the data
through to implementing an interactive or a
number of static data visualizations; analyse the
results; and provide an evaluation of the correct
use of data and visual techniques that were
implemented. The project should be constructed
under an overarching narrative including
conclusions and recommendations.
LO1 Analyse the theory and concepts relating to visualization design and data
representation
LO2 Analyse and distinguish between visualization techniques for specific problems to
enable effective communication of data analysis.
LO3 Design, develop, and implement processes for data visualization.
LO4 Propose a suitable visualization design for a particular combination of data
characteristics and application.
