Validation of CFST Pier-to-Foundation Connection Using ABAQUS (FEA vs Experimental Study)

Job ID: 40373995

Budget: ₹12,500 – ₹37,500 INR

This project focuses on the validation of an experimental investigation on a novel Concrete-Filled Steel Tube (CFST) pier-to-foundation connection with tubed RC encasement using advanced finite element modeling in ABAQUS.

The objective is to reproduce the experimental/numerical work presented in and verify the accuracy of the FE model by comparing:

Load–displacement (load-drift) behavior
Failure modes (FM1, FM2, FM3)
Stress and strain distribution
Lateral resistance and stiffness

The ABAQUS model includes:

Concrete Damaged Plasticity (CDP) for concrete
Steel modeled with elastic–plastic behavior
Surface-to-surface contact with friction
Embedded constraints for reinforcement
Boundary conditions simulating real test setup

Validation is performed by comparing FE results with experimental curves (as shown in page 5 of the paper) where good agreement in stiffness and peak load is reported.

The study also evaluates key parameters such as:

Steel tube thickness and strength
Anchor reinforcement ratio
Encasement dimensions
Axial load effects

The final outcome ensures that the developed numerical model can accurately predict structural behavior and failure mechanisms, making it suitable for seismic and structural design applications.
