Modernized Longhouse?
Budget: $300 – $1,500 USD
"Earthen Dug-out" recreational building for, family and friends on private property. (Intended uses: recreation(Just hanging out, cooking, playing music), storage (similar to a root cellar), smokehouse (food stuffs hung near the chimney could passively be smoked when in use)
Structurally based on a Timber-framed shed/barn with European style cob walls. I have an area in mind with an allowance of 20'x30'. The structure would be raised within an excavated area.
That excavated area would contain footers for the Timber posts of the structure, while the non-bearing area of the floor would be sealed either using cobblestone or an 'earthen' floor.
The structure itself would need to be able to support the weight of at least 3' of soil burying the roof.
The roof would need to be designed in a way to allow a fire-pit in the center of the building to reach a chimney of sorts. The chimney itself is really just a hole in the main roof with space to let smoke through between the main roof and another roof placed over the hole. (Spaces are blocked with hardware cloth to prevent rodents from entering through roof, and there should be some form of lip to prevent wind from entering through those spaces beyond the hardware cloth, while still letting the smoke out.), in the end there should be 8' between the actual fire and the top of the structure, since the fire-pit itself would be at least 1-2' below the floor to keep the fire low and let the heat be absorbed by the stones in the floor.)
The 'chimney' roof would also need to be built in a way that it seems to flows into main roof when completed while still allowing smoke to escape. See "Chimney cap.png", that beautiful picture attempts to outline the lip around the inside of the Chimney cap roof to limit wind. That picture also tries to point out a lip on the Chimney Cap roof itself to support soil placed on top of the chimney cap roof.

"Chimney cap .png" - As mentioned above, this image shows the concept for a sort of lid, that allows smoke to escape the building, while limiting the amount of wind that could get in. It also points out that the roof needs to be buried and provides the only idea we have had so far to bury the roof, while letting the air out, but looking as though the chimney cap flows onto the main roof.

Literally inverted, in a pit rather than raised, see how the beam is directly above the fire and has been blackened, if it just works out that a beam needs to be in the center, would it be structurally sound to try and turn that single center beam into two separate beams surrounding the outside diameter of the fire pit?
