Grade 2 Listed Gates Design Fix

Job ID: 38539142

Budget: £250 – £750 GBP

I am resposible for a pair of stone piers and ornemental gates which are grade 2 listed and need extensive repair.
I've attaced a copy of the structural survey by Airey & Coles and some extra photos of the fixings.

The stone pillar will have to be dismantled and rebuilt, so the current upper fixings will need to be replaced. The gates are about 0.5 tonnes in weight so need to be craned in and out.

I envisage revised fixings which allow vertical and lateral adustment with the facility for the gates to be clamped once in situe.

It might be that the current lower fixings can be re-used if they have sufficient vertical adjustment. However, the top fixings need to be redesigned. The gates were rebuilt about 8 years ago and when they were resited, they were about 75mm closer to the piers than previously. So, it is justifiable to increase the space between them and the piers. Look at the concrete feet in the pictures. These were where the gates used to sit.

For the top fixing, I envisage a horizontal bar fixed and anchored to the pier. On the gates, I'm thinking about a pair of hooks which are open facing down with the ability to be clamped. This would allow the gates to be lifted in and out when they need repainting, which they do now.

Would you be intersted in helping me with this design?

Kind regards.

Geoff Coope.
