T-test and Inferences about the Mean of a Single Sample in SPSS
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to test a hypothesis about a single group mean, using SPSS. In this assignment, we will determine if UNLV students get an average of 8 hours of sleep per night.
Part A: Single-Sample t-test
You will conduct a single-sample t-test to test the null hypothesis that students report getting an average of 8 hours of sleep per night.
1. Conduct a single-sample t-test. To do this,
a. Click Analyze from the menu at the top.
b. Select Compare Means from the drop-down menu.
c. Select One-Sample T Test… from the side menu.
d. Select the variable sleep (“How many hours of sleep did you get last night?”) and click the right arrow to move it into the box that says Test Variable(s).
e. Type “8” in the Test Value box.
f. Click Options. Confirm that the confidence interval is set to 95%, and then click Continue.
2. Go to your output window. Locate the first table, which says “One-Sample Statistics”. In this table, round the mean, standard deviation, and standard error of the mean to two decimal places.
3. Locate the second table, which says “One-Sample Test”. In this table, round the t, mean difference, and lower and upper bounds of 95% confidence interval to two decimal places.
Part B: Interpreting your output
1. To learn how to interpret your output, look at the example output for a single-sample t-test on the last page of this assignment.
a. SPSS uses a two-tailed test. What was the null hypothesis? Answer this question twice, first with words, and second with symbols.
b. What was the alternative hypothesis? Answer this question twice, first with words and second with symbols.
c. What was the mean number of hours of sleep in this sample?
d. What was the value of t-obtained?
e. How many degrees of freedom did t have?
f. What was the p-value? Report your p-value to THREE decimal places.
Note: If SPSS shows the p-value as .000, this means it is less than .0005 and SPSS rounded it down. In psychology, we would report that p-value as p < .001.
g. Would you retain or reject the null hypothesis?
h. What is the 95% confidence interval for the mean?
Note: The 95% confidence interval given by SPSS is NOT the 95% confidence interval for the mean; it is the 95% confidence interval for the difference between the test value (in this case 8) and the mean. To get the 95% confidence interval for the mean, you need to add the test value (in this case 8) to the lower and upper limits given. Use a calculator to find the lower and upper limits, and then answer this question.
Part C: Writing Your Results
a. Write one sentence explaining the results of the t-test. Explain
b. Write an additional sentence explaining the results of the confidence interval for the mean.
c. In your final sentence, state your research conclusions. Your conclusions are your personal opinions about why you got the results you did or the implications of these results for the real world.
