Clinical Decision Support System -- 2
Budget: $30 – $250 CAD
You will have to first choose a problem in healthcare that would benefit from a
CDSS. The elements to be included in your CDSS are listed below. You will not be required to
program for this CDSS. You will not be required to analyze data for your CDSS. The intent of
this project is for you to take the knowledge gained in the course and use it to design your own
CDSS. As well, I do not expect you to be a medical expert in the field that you choose but
should have a “Wikipedia” level of understanding about that condition. As you have learned in
the course, understanding both the medical and technological aspects of the problem is
important to developing a CDSS.
1. Identify the problem, users and decisions requiring a CDSS.
2. Design a CDSS framework. This should be a graphical representation of the elements of
the CDSS and how they work together.
3. Describe your knowledge base (e.g., expert opinion, statistical, machine learning).
4. Describe the data required for the CDSS. You do not have to identify where to get the
data but should describe the variables/features needed to run your CDSS.
5. Describe the output of the CDSS. Providing some simple graphical examples would be
beneficial
6. Describe how your CDSS would help a clinician make better decisions.
7. A 10-minute presentation.
Deliverables:
1. A 5 page (double spaced) written report with headings describing the elements listed
above. You must have a minimum of 5 references with appropriate formatting
A few potential decision-making problems to examine:
1. COVID-19 vaccine DSS
2. Cancer screening DSS
3. Cancer treatment DSS
4. Hospital admission DSS
5. Surgical candidate selection DSS
6. Hospital discharge DSS
7. Emergency department triage acuity DSS
8. Emergency department medical directive DSS
9. Genetic disease investigation DSS
10. Stroke management DS
These are a few of the possibilities. Most of the topics provided are very broad. For example, if
you decided to examine cancer screening, then you should choose one particular type of cancer
(e.g., breast cancer, colorectal cancer, or prostate cancer). In a similar example, if you were to
examine surgical candidate selection using a DSS then you would choose one specific surgical
condition (e.g., gallbladder removal, thyroid removal, or bowel resection).
