Guidelines:
Cemeteries are an ideal place to study survivorship, as gravestones tend to record the date of birth, date of death and the sex of the deceased. This information is useful in calculating death rates and drawing survivorship curves, which can be used to compare demographic trends over the years.
In your groups you will need to collect data from approximately 150 graves. Approximately half the sample should be female and the other half male.
For both males and females, approximately half the sample you collect should have died before 1945 and half after 1945.
You will need to record the sex, the birth year, year of death and age at death, of each person.
Having obtained the data your group is required to explore the following:
Compare survivorship curves for men and women dying before and after 1945.
Provide a commentary on what trends can be observed between the pre and post 1945 survivorship curves and the possible reasons for any changes.
Try and consider different age ranges: the under 5 years old; those between 20-50 years old; those over 50 years old.
Consider both national and local reasons for the trends you see. Are there any local factors which might have influenced age .
