Setup Scalable Self-Hosted OpenStreetMap Vector Tile Mapping Stack
Budget: $750 – $1,500 USD
Project Description:
We need an experienced developer to build a scalable, self-hosted web mapping solution using open-source tools. The objective is to create an independent alternative to commercial map APIs (like Google Maps/Maptiler) by setting up a complete pipeline based on OpenStreetMap (OSM) data.
Core Tasks:
* Vector Tile Pipeline: Implement a configurable process using Tilemaker (preferred) or Planetiler to generate vector tiles (MBTiles format) from OSM .pbf data for specified geographic regions.
* Tile Server Deployment: Install and configure an efficient tile server (tileserver-gl preferred, or Martin) to host and serve the generated vector tiles and associated map styles.
* Map Styling: Create or adapt a MapLibre Style (style.json, using Maputnik) suitable for a general-purpose street map, utilizing the self-hosted vector tiles.
* Web Client: Develop a lightweight single-page web map using MapLibre GL JS that consumes the self-hosted tiles/style and includes standard interactive map controls (zoom, pan, rotate, scale, fullscreen, geolocate).
* Documentation: Provide concise documentation covering setup, configuration, deployment (Linux, Docker preferred), and the process for updating OSM data.
Required Technology Stack:
* OSM Data (.pbf)
* Tilemaker or Planetiler
* MBTiles format
* tileserver-gl or Martin
* MapLibre Style Specification / Maputnik
* MapLibre GL JS, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript
* Linux Server Environment
Deliverables:
* Configuration files & processing scripts (parameterized for different regions).
* Example MBTiles file for a sample region.
* Final style.json file.
* MapLibre GL JS client source code.
* Setup, deployment, and maintenance documentation.
Required Skills:
* Demonstrable experience with OSM data processing & vector tile generation (Tilemaker/Planetiler).
* Experience deploying and managing tile servers (tileserver-gl/Martin).
* Proficiency with MapLibre styles and MapLibre GL JS development.
* Strong Linux command-line and web development skills (JS/HTML/CSS).
* Clear technical writing ability for documentation.
* Docker experience is highly desirable.
How to Apply:
Please submit a proposal outlining:
* Your specific experience with the required technologies.
* Your proposed approach and estimated timeframe.
* Links to relevant past work (if possible).
* Your project bid.
