Build a Cellular System 2/3G Tesbed

Objective

The project has different objectives listed as follows but not limited to:
• Establish a virtual infrastructure for the 2/3G network testbed, including base stations, mobile switching
centre (MSC), home location register (HLR) and other essential components.
• Deploy the necessary software to simulate a realistic cellular network environment.
• Integrate the necessary protocols and signalling procedures to mimic a functional 2/3G cellular network.
• Implement mechanisms to monitor and analyse network traffic in real-time.
• Ensure compatibility and interoperability with different network elements from various open source
softwares.

Goals

The project has different goals listed as follows but not limited to:
• Facilitate knowledge transfer to ensure that the testbed can be effectively utilised for research, development,
and educational purposes.
• Provide training sessions for the users and administrators of the testbed.
• Design the testbed architecture to be adaptable for future technology upgrades and expansions.

Solution

The project relies on the integration of different open source softwares such as:
• Osmocom cellular network infrastructure project.
• Moiji-mobile open source software for certain network elements such as HLR and SMSC.
• Any other suitable and available open source could be discovered during the realisation of the project.


DELIVERABLES

Below the three batches of deliverables throughout the project execution.

First batch

• One virtual machine hosts the entire 2/3G network infrastructure
• Create comprehensive documentation for the testbed setup, configuration, execution for each network
elements.
• Create preliminary documentation for the test scenarios used to ensure implementation quality.
• Generate detailed report on the performance, limitations, and recommendations for further
improvements.

Second batch

• A containerised-based testbed solution where each network elements has its own container.
• Create comprehensive documentation for the testbed setup, configuration, execution for each network
elements.
• Create preliminary documentation for the test scenarios used to ensure implementation quality.
• Generate detailed report on the performance, limitations, and recommendations for further
improvements.

Third batch

• A testing scenarios playbook a comprehensive document that outlines various testing scenarios and
their corresponding steps. For example,
• Conduct testing scenarios to evaluate the effectiveness of security mechanisms and identify potential
vulnerabilities.
• Develop scenarios to test the mobility management of mobile devices, including handovers between
different cells and location updating procedures,… etc


CANDIDATES:

The ideal candidate should have experience and expertise in the following areas:

• Software Area :
• C, Python and Object Oriented Programming (Smalltalk is preferred).
• Virtual machines, Docker, Git, Github, MangoDB etc


• Telecom Area: ( The project’s owner could provide a training session for potential candidates lacks
such telecom expertise )
• General knowledge of cellular system specially GSM, GPRS, EDGE and UMTS technologies
• Proficient in building and setting up 2G/3G cellular systems
• Experience in configuring and managing base stations and network elements
