Budget: $750 – $1,500 AUD
Streetscape Artist Sketch Brief
What: The brief is to draft 12-15 colour sketches of streetscapes, that exemplify walkable neighbourhoods (definition below), that are to be built as sustainable as possible. The Building materials will be Cross Laminated timber (CLT), glass and for ground floors, masonry (bricks, concrete).
Why: The sketches will be used to accompany a pitch deck, looking to get investors for a new company. The company seeks to build walkable towns/villages, completely sustainable. Sustainability will be reached by removing the need for driving, using CLT as a prime building material, having as much greenery as possible, renewable energy etc.
What is a walkable town? A walkable town or village is one that has minimal need for cars, and largely doesn't have cars in most of the inner streets. The ground floor is often commercial zoning, shops, or kiosks (with the occasional residential). The upper floors are either commercial or residential. The whole premise is that they are mixed use, so that residents can live within walking distance to the shops. I have attached photos of streetscapes of walkable towns from around the world. Refer inset below for the ‘Walk Score’ definition for what makes a walkable neighbourhood.
The inspiration of this company is to be completely sustainable, by not only building sustainably, but also eliminating the need for cars (as much as possible). The buildings will be made of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and glass, with the option of masonry on the ground floor. Photos have been included.
I would like the artist to create sketches that shows similar streetscapes, noting -
NO cars
Ground floor is mostly commercial
Second floors are mixed use, commercial and residential.
Very inviting and warm street life.
People dotted throughout,
All buildings to be made from CLT.
Architecture is all nice and familiar (not overly modern) with flat roofs.
Architecture can be varied, neighbouring properties don't have to all be the 100% same. An organic, ‘well established’ look is preferred. As though the village has been there for years and some people have made alterations over those years.
Show examples of public transport such as bike lanes, trams etc.
Flowing water in a narrow creek/river/canal can appear in some.
Observe the spatial definition ratio range, ideally between 3:1 and 1:3 (refer to first page of pdf attachment).
Some other features of these villages that can inform your sketches but are not mandatory to be included are -
Rooftop farm gardens
Roadside farm gardens
Hilly sites, with small dams at the top and bottom with a narrow creek between.
Solar panels
In a sentence, sketches of a walkable town like those you have visited in any old picturesque neighbourhood around the world, though built with CLT, and with plenty of access to ground floor shops, and easy transport such as bikes and trams.
