Select & Simulate Power Switch
Budget: $30 – $250 USD
I want to decide on the most appropriate semiconductor switch for a new switch-mode power supply design, with switching speed as the overriding priority. Although I initially considered a thyristor, I’m open to any device—MOSFET, IGBT, BJT or another alternative—that demonstrably outperforms the rest once the figures are on the table.
Here’s what the work entails. First, analyse the SMPS topology and its expected operating conditions, then shortlist realistic candidates and justify the final choice in terms of rise/fall times, turn-on/turn-off losses, and any ancillary gate-drive or snubber requirements. Once the device is chosen, run a full simulation (LTspice, PSpice, SIMetrix, MATLAB Simulink or equivalent) that shows switching waveforms, efficiency trends over load, and thermal behaviour under worst-case duty cycles.
Deliverables
• Brief comparison matrix of at least three candidate switches
• Complete schematic and simulation files
• Plots for voltage, current, switching losses and junction temperature
• One-page summary explaining why the recommended device best meets the speed target and how it affects overall SMPS efficiency
