Resolve ETAP Fault Current and simulation Discrepancies

Job ID: 40359484

Budget: $30 – $100 USD

I have built an ETAP model of the IEEE 13-bus feeder with a PV source and completed a full protection-coordination study, yet the short-circuit module is returning unrealistic fault current values. Because those values feed directly into my relay settings, the time-current curves no longer prove CTI compliance, and the entire coordination becomes suspect.

What I need urgently is a focused review of the fault-current simulation results themselves. Please examine the ETAP file and trace all assumptions affecting short-circuit levels, including source impedance, transformer impedance, line data, grounding, PV inverter contribution, breaker ratings, and any relevant study or calculation options. Then rerun the short-circuit study and identify the reason for the unrealistic values. If any parameters are incorrect, please point them out and correct them. If study settings or calculation selections are wrong, please revise them. If the issue arises from a modelling limitation in ETAP, please explain the limitation and suggest a practical workaround.

Deliverables

Cleaned-up ETAP model with corrected inputs and settings
Short technical memo (PDF or Word) summarising the root cause of the unrealistic currents, the remedial steps taken, and any remaining limitations
Updated relay coordination report demonstrating verified CTI values
Clear screenshots or plots of the revised TCCs for quick cross-checking

Once the base model and fault-current calculations have been corrected and validated, I would also like support with a limited penetration and mitigation assessment so I can get back on track quickly. Please run the corrected model at a few representative PV penetration levels, or in progressive steps if feasible, to help identify where protection miscoordination begins. At one penetration level where miscoordination is evident, please introduce and test a practical mitigation measure—preferably directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs), or another suitable protection adjustment—and show whether coordination can be restored. The aim of this extension is to give me a reliable technical starting point so I can continue the remaining simulations myself.

I am working in ETAP 19.0.1, so please use that version or a fully compatible one. Time is critical, so please let me know how soon you could return a first pass once the file is received.
