Hybridization of Energy Storage System for Electrical Vehicles

Electrical Vehicles (EV) is replacing the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) based vehicles rapidly. The lifespan of battery bank, which takes significantly portion of the total vehicle cost, determines the lifetime of EVs. Sudden acceleration/deceleration and driving in extreme high/low temperature are posing significant challenges for battery life cycles. On the other hand, super capacitor, with characteristics of longer life cycles, wider operating temperature range and faster charging/discharging ramping rate, could be a good complement for Li-ion batteries.

This project aims at coordination control of li-ion battery and super capacitor to enhance overall system performance for EV applications. Coordination strategy should be developed and its performance in both steady and transient states should be verified with modeling and simulation. Sizing of super capacitor should be another issue addressed to make the system economically feasible.

Scope of the project includes:
• Literature review
• Power electronic converter design
• Modeling and simulation with PLECS
• Sizing of super capacitor

Requirements:
• Understanding the operation of battery energy storage system, power electronic converters
• Understanding simple control system: proportional integral control
