“Modeling and Simulation of a Cogeneration-Based Hybrid Energy System for a Building using TRNSYS.”

The project focuses on a building-scale energy system in which electrical and thermal demands are supplied through a combination of cogeneration, renewable sources, and energy storage.

Proposed system configuration:

Primary generation: micro gas turbine operating in load-following mode, producing electricity with heat recovery for domestic hot water.

Renewable integration: photovoltaic system and wind turbine supporting electrical production and reducing fuel consumption.

Thermal support: solar thermal collectors contributing to domestic hot water production, with auxiliary boiler backup.

Energy storage: electrical battery storage and thermal hot-water storage tank.

Energy users: building electrical load and domestic hot water thermal load.

The project will analyze how the integration of cogeneration with renewables and storage affects:

coverage of electrical and thermal demands,

fuel consumption of the gas turbine,

utilization of storage systems,

interaction with the electrical grid.

The TRNSYS model will be developed by integrating and extending the classroom projects on PV and electrical storage, solar hot-water systems, and PV–wind–gas turbine hybrid plants. Annual simulations will be performed using realistic weather data and load profiles.
