Show Product Color Variants on Shopify Collection Page

Hi,
We want to display product color variants on the collection page in shopify.
When the user clicks on the variant he should be directed to the product with the right variant pre-selected.
There is an app that describes this better: https://apps.shopify.com/show-variants-on-collection-page
However it is expensive and badly rated. We are using the impulse theme for shopify. There are already code snippets out there.
