Smart backlinks for print-on-demand web store

I am building two POD online stores and I am interested in small and smart backlink boost for these sites.
Quality over quantity first!
These links should be thoughtful and selected one by one, only sensible sites. One example I have in my mind, there is a change to create some sort of profile and showcase some designs, this could work. No suspicious and random sites at all, and total few links would be enough for this round.
I am not fine with traditional backlink building, since we can see nowadays that it is often times harmful and site might lose the traffic.
Let me know your ideas, we need few suitable sites for caps, tote bags and t-shirts to get some traffic from search engines!
