Research case study

Job ID: 31980772

Budget: $30 – $250 SGD

Background
The electrification of mine sites is a critical step to realising a zero carbon future for the mining industry. Replacing diesel mobile equipment and mine site power generation (often diesel generators or fossil fuel grids) with renewable powered electric equipment, can remove carbon emissions entirely from mine operations.

Before a transition to electric power can be actioned or achieved, it will be necessary for mining companies to identify and assess the impacts electrification will have on mine operations, to test and compare the different scenarios available with electrification, and to understand how to achieve the optimal electrified mine design. Detailed simulation will be a key enabler of this process, providing vision of the end-to-end mining value chain and demonstrating the value electrification would deliver.

The Problem
Mining operations are a complex network of dependent systems structured along a value chain through Mining, Processing, Marketing and Supporting Infrastructure. Within underground Mining, the Ventilation, Electrical Infrastructure, Mine Design and Vehicle systems will all be impacted by the transition from diesel to electric vehicles.

To be able to build a holistic understanding of how electrification may impact operations and to support informed investment decisions, mining companies are seeking simulation solutions that could help to demonstrate the whole of asset value in transitioning from diesel to electric solutions, considering each of the dependent systems . However, there is currently no solution available in the mining industry today to support the integrated simulation of these complex systems.

This technology gap represents a significant opportunity to develop a complete simulation solution that could be used industry wide. The opportunity exists to develop solutions that initially drive the electrification agenda, and in the future help to accelerate the mining industry towards more sustainable operations in other areas such as water, waste and clean products.

The Challenge
propose your design and approach for developing an open architecture, scalable mine design simulation platform that can initially be used to compare a fully electric underground mine with its diesel powered equivalent. We are looking for expressions of interest from the crowd to collaborate on this opportunity.

We challenge innovators to propose simulation solutions that:

Could initially be used to compare a fully electric underground mine with its diesel-powered equivalent
Could eventually be expanded to simulate other mining value chain architectures and sub-systems
Allow comparisons of simple business fundamentals such as mine productivity, capital costs, operating costs and energy system
Could expand to include more complex operating considerations such as energy demand management and underground air quality
Include part of the solution or an entire solution
Range from low to high Technology Readiness Level or require further development
As a consortium, we are challenging you to show us how a mine design simulation platform could be developed that meets these objectives. We want to hear from you no matter how much, or how little, of the total solution you can show us.
