A potential process of recovery is called succession. In 1986, there was a nuclear power plant disaster at Chernobyl in northern Ukraine. After the disaster there was a designated “exclusion zone” surrounding the disaster area, and it is still in place. Some residents have returned to the “exclusion zone” to live. Chapter 5 lists two kinds of successions.
a. Describe ecological succession using ecosystem level responses of developmental, stable and disturbed states.
b. Which kind of succession is occurring in the area surrounding the Chernobyl disaster? Give two examples from the article above.
